concept
“Where there is light, there must be shadow, where there is shadow there must be light. There is no shadow without light and no light without shadow.... We do not know if the so-called Little People are good or evil.” Haruki Murakami, 1Q84
So, it follows for me that where there is pleasure, there surely must be anti-pleasure. A trade-off.
VISUAL APPROACH
I associate pleasure with soft light, so it follows in my mind, that “anti-pleasure” lighting should be harsh. The warm diffuse glow of a pleasurable moment gives way to the “cold light of day”.
The detritus in these still lifes reveal the people by the imprint they leave.
What I’m looking for
Events, ceremonies, offices, political campaigns, art exhibitions, artists’ studios, restaurants, bars, etc. anything that reveals the duality of pleasure. If you have an event that I can come photograph towards the end, please email me!
